Yamira Díaz

Yamira Díaz

Biography

She was born in Pinar del Río, the most western province in Cuba, and grew up in the midst of a family closely linked to both music and medicine.  That is why she is currently performing both professions.
During her school years, she participated in a number of festivals sponsored by the Students´ Federation.  She always sang her songs accompanied by her guitar and following the esthetic of the New Trova in Cuba, a movement which deeply influenced her generation.
In 1994, after being the most awarded artist at the "Los Días de la Música" (The Days of Music) National Festival of Young Creators, she became member of the Saíz Brothers Association, an organization that groups the most outstanding Cuban young artists with the purpose of supporting and promoting their work.
As an author, her work is highly valued by both specialists and the public at large since the letters of her songs are articulated as fables and display a sober harmonic work.  Yamira composes beau tiful melodies based on an essentially lyric proposal thus covering the most diverse genders as, for example, the traditional trova, the son, the guajira, the punto, the sucu sucu and the blues and achieving, now and then, an unusual and excellent fusion.  When exercising the critic, many publications have resorted to her texts as reference for ethic and esthetic assessments since her transparent, mature and sharp songs reflect the daily reality of both her author and her compatriots.  Her most well-known works include "Contracorriente", "Basado en hechos reales", "Hombres y manzanas" and the beautiful "Nana del Cimarrón".
She has performed at different scenarios in Cuba and Spain.  She has also played in many concerts either alone or accompanied by excellent interpreters as the "Vuelta Abajo" group, the "Trébol" jazz quintet, troubadour  Diego Cano and the Trovarroco trio, and each new presentation constitutes an ingenious proposal.  She has shared the stage with important personalities of the Cuban culture.
She is currently leading her own group, with a small instrumental format, well-known for the virtuosity of its musicians and the spiritual characteristics of Yamira´s music.
She is highly regarded in her native province, where she is currently living.  Her work has spread at home and abroad for Yamira has now became one of the best examples of the Cuban contemporary trova and is one of the few women who has promoted this gender in the country.
